12 Gore Globe

12 Gore Globe
Lunoid

Gore Square (deprecated – feh, uck, ptui)

Better Gore Square

For experimental use – it’s not quite done yet.

(Oh, and if any of those fancy New York design firms are curious, we may be open origami evangelists, but we can be bought licensed.)

This is very nice! There hasn’t been much done with making origami spheres, aside from attempts using, say, hundreds of Sonobe units. This is prety durn elegant.

Being no NY designer, I’m not offering money, only my deep admiration.
I particularly like the “gothique flamboyant” style of the CP.

Mélisande*, I’d rather have your approval than New York dollars, any day. And flamboyant gothic was in my head, too.

And thanks, Tom — it’s a model that I’ve thought about, time to time, over the years. I think I may have mentioned the idea in an early Imagiro. I’m still hitting the same wall with it, though. Seems to me, if I know the angles at the top and bottom of the gore and the height of the paper, I ought to be able to calculate the radius of the curve. So far, I haven’t been able to figure this out. A little lecture from a passing mathematician would be gratefully listened to.

[…] We’ve been folding a lot of Lunoids around the house lately, really enjoying this great model by Philip Chapman-Bell. Most definitely download the CP and give it a try, it makes an oddly appealing shape that is most hard to identify. […]

Thank you all – it’s a fun piece and I’m still developing the idea. And reading up on the history of geometry and trig.

In the interests of full disclosure, I will mention that while surfing around last week for something else, I happened on a picture of a model by Leong Cheng Chit. This is extremely similar in concept, so we’re resigning any pretensions to first discovery.

Leong Cheng Chit’s web address suggests that he’s in Singapore and if I ever get to the Kitty City, I know who I’m hanging with. This guy is way cool.
